The Houses at Sagaponac, #22
Bridgehampton, New York
This project is part of a development known as "The Houses at Sagaponac," planned for a 65-acre site in the Hamptons, near the eastern tip of Long Island. The development is comprised of a series of homes designed by internationally recognized architects who were given the directive to achieve design excellence in a home of relatively modest scale and cost. According to the brief, "the project intends to inspire a shift in residential construction away from the current conventions of grandiosity and repetition, towards sensibility and artistic vision."

The proposed House #22 consists of a main block with a double-height living space, mezzanine, master bedroom, and a wraparound circulation stair that cinches the main block. Adjoined is a secondary block; with the kitchen, guest suit, and storage. An exterior patio area for gathering and a water element; possibly for swimming.

The main block frame consists of three columns and beams; defined by a triangle in plan, and a secondary steel frame for the stair. The wraparound stair will provide floor to ceiling glazing continuously from ground level to the top. Walls of the main block are made with ribs to provide the exterior curve and interior planar surfaces for ease of construction. The space between the walls can be used for mechanical systems, insulation, etc. Walls of the secondary block are typical wood frame construction.

The living room is a double-height space with faceted walls. The mezzanine has a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. It could be used as a library/study with built-in shelving. Fireplaces are located in the living room and the master bedroom. Typical operable window types are located in rooms for light and air. The exterior material is entirely of standard wood shingles.
